Hello! I’m Susie Lane, Photographer of all things lovely and delicious and blog creator of Beyond the Kitchen Door. Welcome to my second home. I spend a lot of time here so I want to make it as cozy as possible so, kick your feet up, relax, grab a glass of wine or your favorite beverage and stay a while.
A little bit about me, I am a wife and stay-at-home mama to our son, Charlie. When not chasing Charlie around, I’m busy creating recipes, taking photos and enjoying life with my “tribe” of friends and family. I’m so lucky.
My college degree is in education; however, I quickly discovered not long after college that I had a desire to spread by wings and see the world and after a short stint in the classroom, I became a flight attendant for a major airline spanning a career of 17 years.
It was during my flying career that I honed in on another passion of mine, food. Graduating with honors from the Art Institute of Seattle culinary program, I took a leap of faith and started my personal chef business, Kitchen Door.
After becoming a chef for several prominent and wonderful people in the greater Seattle area I found there was a niche to be served, home-delivered prepared meals. Like me, many people were struggling with how to get food on the table after a long day at work, let alone figuring out “What’s for Dinner?”. Eventually, I morphed my personal chef business into a thriving home meal delivery program, feeding hungry customers around the greater Seattle area.
Sadly, 10 years after opening Kitchen Door – we had to make the very difficult decision to close. It was a successful journey, I learned A LOT but it was time for that ship to sail.
I told my husband I needed some time to figure things out. While I was still passionate about working and creating my own “thing”, I wanted to do something from home so that I could be present to watch our son grow. It occurred to me that I have a rather large collection of recipes that I have used over the years both from our own family cooking as well as recipes from my personal chef days and meal delivery business. I couldn’t think of a better platform than this blog to share recipes and inspire others to get back in the kitchen at cook.
It dawned on me though during this process, that if I were to showcase my cooking, I needed high quality images to bring these recipes to life. Enter the world of photography. My DSLR had been collecting dust and it was time to put it to work. After taking my first photography workshop course through Cork and Click I was hooked. I had found the missing piece. Bringing my world of cooking together with beautiful imagery tied everything together for me. I love telling the story of food and life and how they are intertwined in everything that we do.
In addition, my husband and I are huge fans of the Whole30 program, successfully completing two rounds. You will see quite a few Whole30 recipes here as well as tried and true family favorites that are not Whole30 as we believe in a balance and finding what works for you.
In an effort to bring everything together; healthy living, food & recipes, travel and my newest love, photography, this blog was born, Beyond the Kitchen Door. I want to help and encourage YOU to be living your best life. On this site you will see a variety of topics and many Whole30 recipes. You’ll also see cooking tips and recipes that are not Whole30. All of the recipes are conveniently broken down into subcategories for easy navigating from the top menu bar.
If you are interested in working with me as a photographer, I encourage you to contact me so that we may discuss how I may bring your ideas to life.
Thank you for stopping by, come visit often! There’s always something new to discover.
