Polka Dot Squares

Passed down from my Great-Grandmother

I remember as a kid, my grandmother very commonly had a pan of these little goodies on her counter. She had gotten the recipe from her mother, and they have been passed down in our family since. After people try them, I am almost always asked for the recipe.

Prep time: 5 MinCook time: 35 MinTotal time: 40 Min

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 c. brown sugar
  • 2/3 c. butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla (I highly recommend Watkin's Vanilla)
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 2/3 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 c. chopped nuts (walnuts are great, nuts are optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter, and brown sugar over low heat stirring continuously until melted and combined into a caramel sauce.
  3. Cool.
  4. Beat in 3 eggs and vanilla using a hand mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle.
  5. Mix dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt, chocolate chips) in a separate bowl.  Gradually add to the wet mixture, until just combined.
  6. Spread into a greased 13"x9" baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
